Safeguarding Policy

Our commitment
Northwell Education is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all young people in our care. We believe that every child and young person has the right to be safe, and that safeguarding is everyone's responsibility.
All staff, volunteers and visitors are expected to act in a way that protects young people from harm. Safeguarding considerations are embedded in everything we do — from how we design our environment to how we build relationships with learners and families.
Our safeguarding policy is reviewed annually and is available in full on request. It is written in line with current statutory guidance, including Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) and Working Together to Safeguard Children.
Designated Safeguarding Lead
Our Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) is responsible for managing all safeguarding concerns and referrals. All staff know who the DSL is and how to contact them. The DSL has received appropriate training and works closely with local authority safeguarding teams and other agencies where required.
Raising a concern
If you have a concern about the welfare of a young person at Northwell Education, please contact us directly and ask to speak to the Designated Safeguarding Lead.
If you believe a young person is in immediate danger, contact the police on 999 or Leeds Children's Social Work Services on 0113 222 4403.
Concerns raised in good faith will always be taken seriously. You do not need to be certain that abuse has occurred to raise a concern — it is always better to share a worry than to stay silent.
Key principles
- The welfare of the young person is always the primary consideration.
- All staff receive safeguarding training before working with young people.
- We maintain accurate records of all safeguarding concerns and actions taken.
- We work in partnership with parents, carers and external agencies where appropriate.
- Safer recruitment procedures are followed for all staff and volunteers.

Behaviour Policy

Our ethos
Northwell Education is an inclusive community. We welcome young people regardless of their background, previous experiences or behaviour history. We do not exclude on the basis of need.
At the same time, we are a village. A community only works when everyone in it is treated with respect. That is the one expectation we hold firm on — not because we are rigid, but because every young person in our care deserves to feel safe and valued.
Our approach to behaviour is relational and restorative. We focus on understanding why behaviour happens, addressing the underlying need, and repairing relationships when things go wrong — rather than simply applying sanctions.
Expectations
We ask all learners to:
- Treat every person in the building with respect — staff, peers and visitors.
- Arrive on time and engage with the programme to the best of their ability.
- Take responsibility for their actions and be honest when things go wrong.
- Respect the physical environment and the property of others.
- Support the wellbeing of the community — look out for each other.
Restorative approach
When behaviour falls below expectations, our first response is always to understand what happened and why. We use restorative conversations to help young people reflect on the impact of their actions and identify how to move forward.
Sanctions are used only where necessary and are proportionate to the behaviour. They are never used punitively or in a way that damages the relationship between staff and learner.
In serious cases where the safety of others is at risk, we will take appropriate action — including involving parents, carers or external agencies. Persistent behaviour that puts others at risk may result in a placement review.
What we will not tolerate
The following behaviours are incompatible with our community values and will always be addressed formally:
- Bullying, harassment or intimidation of any kind — including online.
- Discrimination on the basis of race, gender, religion, disability, sexuality or any other characteristic.
- Physical aggression towards staff, peers or visitors.
- Bringing prohibited items onto the premises.
